The International Schools of The Hague

The Hague is known for many things–its quick access to the beach, the Mauritshuis with its world-famous art collection, and the Peace Palace. But what you might not know is that The Hague also has the highest concentration of international schools in the Netherlands. You’ll also find an excellent selection of English-speaking play-schools (peuterspeelzalen), day care facilities (kinderdagverblijven), and after school care (buitenschoolse opvang) options.

Primary Schools

Primary school education in the Netherlands is available to children starting at the age of four. However, it is not compulsory until age five. Education at this level then continues until the age of 11 or 12. Private international schools primarily deliver their curriculum in English, while so-called Foreign National Schools, such as the French and German schools, use their native tongue.

Secondary Schools

Secondary school education in the Netherlands runs from age 12 until age 18. The first four years typically work to prepare students for the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IBMYP). The paths following this point can vary from school (type) to school.

So much choice when it comes to both primary and secondary schools is great news for expats moving to the Netherlands with their children. It means international education is one less thing you have to worry about!
