Things to Do in Utrecht During Your Short Stay
Utrecht: Small enough to explore on foot, with a medieval city centre who’s roots you can visit underground at DOM under. This is a Dutch city perfect for a short stay. And to help you make the most of your time here, these are our top tips for things to do in Utrecht.
1.Make Some Music
Be prepared for some noise when you step inside the Museum Speelklok. Dedicated to self-playing musical instruments, you’ll be treated to tunes from Dutch street organs, the Violina, and everything in-between.
2. Appreciate the Canals
The Utrecht canals feature an element that makes them unique: their wharf cellars. In the 13th-century, shipyards became water-level second streets with deep storage cellars running below the houses above. Nowadays, many have been converted into food and drink establishments. So, whether you decide to enjoy the canals and wharf cellars from aboard a boat or inside enjoying a refreshing drink—it is an Utrecht short stay must.
3. Catch a Train to Nowhere
Train enthusiasts, young and old, will love a visit to Het Spoorwegmuseum (Railway Museum). Housed in the former Maliebaan Station, it isn’t just trains you will see, although there are plenty of those. You’ll also find restored station rooms, exhibits, and railway artefacts.
4. Climb the Dom
There is no doubt that the Dom Tower dominates the city. The highest and oldest church tower in the Netherlands, it is a real landmark. The views from the top, especially on a clear day, are spectacular. But there is only one way to see them yourself—by climbing to the top. With no lift, the only way to visit the peak of the tower is by tackling all 465 steps. That’s one way to remember your short stay in Utrecht!
5. Visit a UNESCO World Heritage Site
The Rietveld Schröder House in Utrecht was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2000. Designed in 1924 by Gerrit Rietveld, it is an icon of modern architecture and the De Stijl art movement.
6. Say “Hello” to Miffy
Whether you know her as Miffy or Nijntje, the small white rabbit was created by the Dutch artist Dick Bruna. In Utrecht, you’ll find the Miffy Museum—great for a visit or just to pick up some cute gifts to take home.
7. Explore Castle De Haar
Last but not least, if your short stay in Utrecht permits it, pay a visit to Castle De Haar. The biggest and most luxurious castle of the Netherlands is located outside of the city.
